What is Phlebectomy?

Phlebectomy involves removing bulging varicose veins using cosmetic minor incisions (3mm incisions). A local anesthetic is used to anesthetize the skin and the procedure can be done in the clinic. The incisions are so small that no sutures are needed to close them. The operation is performed under a local anesthetic where tiny incisions are made in the veins affected. We only need to use a local anesthetic in the area where a needle will pierce tissue near the problem vein. Through that small hole, a tiny hook is inserted. The varicose vein is then removed, leaving nearly no scarring at all. In most cases, only one treatment is required to correct the problem.

What to Expect

The ambulatory phlebectomy, usually performed on an outpatient basis, calls for surgical removal of surface varicose veins.

After your varicose vein is removed, you will go home wearing a bandage and possibly a compression stocking temporarily. Some potential after effects of the phlebectomy may include:

  • Allergic reaction to the local anesthetic
  • Local numbness
  • Minimal scarring
  • Slight bruising

Most patients are able to return to normal activity the day after a phlebectomy, although we always recommend rest for at least 24 hours.
