VNUS Closure

Minimally invasive vascular treatments to achieve the best outcomes.

What is VNUS Closure?

This is a minimally invasive vascular surgery method that allows us to treat deeper veins of the legs without requiring open surgery, even for many patients with severe varicose veins. These techniques can be done simply and effectively on an outpatient basis using only local anesthesia.

Radiofrequency Ablation for Veins

This minimally invasive vascular surgery method allows us to treat deeper veins in the legs without requiring open surgery, even for many patients with severe varicose veins. These techniques can be done simply and effectively on an outpatient basis using only local anesthesia. In the VNUS Closure treatment, the doctor inserts a small catheter, or tube into the vein. Then a probe is threaded through the tube and the tip of the probe heats up inside of the vein to close it off. The heat is generated by radiofrequency energy, which provides just enough uniform heat to contract the collagen in the vein walls. Once you bein collapse and seal, your blood flow is redirected into healthy veins.

Minimally Invasive Treatment

Over time, CVI worsens and lessens the amount of oxygen-rich blood carried to the heart from the lower legs. Varicose veins should be treated to avoid them advancing to CVI, which can bring on swelling, skin damage, sores and leg pain. Fortunately, our vein specialists can suggest minimally invasive vein treatment options to relieve both varicose veins and CVI.

While simple conservative methods such as wearing compression stockings may ease some symptoms, we can provide information about endovenous ablation, a VNUS Closure procedure using the Venefit™ method of radiofrequency ablation.

After VNUS Closure:

Following the procedure, the catheter is removed and a bandage or compression stocking is placed on the treated leg. Patients are able to walk immediately after the procedure and most individuals are able to return to work the next day.

Once your blood begins flowing in the right direction, through healthy veins after the VNUS closure treatment, you may experience slight bruising but symptoms of varicose veins improve. Possible complications of endovenous radio frequency ablation are thermal skin burns and transient numbness.

In time, the treated (formerly varicose) vein shrinks and is absorbed by the body. Compared with more invasive surgical options like ligation and vein stripping, endovenous ablation offers less pain and quicker recovery time. We recommend this vein treatment because it provides a faster, more comfortable recovery and the ability to quickly return to their everyday activities. It also improves the appearance of varicose veins.

Endovenous radio frequency ablation (Closure® procedure) is FDA approved for the treatment of the greater saphenous vein. In addition, Venefit™ Targeted Endovenous Therapy using the ClosureFast™ catheter is currently the only form of segmental radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of CVI in the United States.
